Performance Evaluation System at VIT

What is Education

It is enlightenment, Illumination and awakening as told by Swami Vivekananda

·      Evaluation performance system is the result of the effort of some very meticulous faculty members. They collect comprehensive information which is then taken into consideration by the management and finally ideas are formulated for faculty evaluation.

What a Teacher needs?

·      Focus closely on academics and tutoring students

·      To gather knowledge and to be a good researcher. Simultaneously, one has to be a teacher as well as an efficient researcher.

·      A link between corporate aspects and the academics. Should take up projects, consultation and to take up administrative responsibility as well. One should work with society and students as well.

·      Lecture delivery and teaching manner should be effective.

Undergraduate Students rarely opt for Higher Education. Therefore, most of them opt only for jobs immediately after Bachelors. Being Institute of Excellence (IOE), it is expected from VIT to be an outstanding Institute which focuses on higher education as well. This can be achieved by kindling interest amongst students to opt for PG and research at VIT. S/he should be inspired and interested in higher studies at UG Level itself. Therefore, a teacher can do substantial service by inspiring her/his students to opt for higher education and research. We can do so only by updating ourselves. By being voracious reader and outstanding researcher.

Growth rate of students opting for higher education and research has decreased substantially. However, number of students has increased. Again, it is a downward trend. Therefore, it is essential to get published in very good journals and to earn citations. Unless and until one is a good researcher, one cannot be a good guide and remains unable to inspire others to take up research.

In 2016, only 0.62% of the GDP has been spent on research as compared to countries like Brazil, China, Japan etc. who spent a generous amount of their GDP on research. Despite of such a small share allocated for research, we need to be productive and show our prowess with the help of whatever is available to us. Our university on the other hand provides ample resources to its faculty members to take up research.

Researchers per one million in India was only 216.2 in 2016 as compared to China (1200), US (4300) and South Korea (7100). And this has a strong impact on the publications as well.

Dynamic Equilibrium

·                     There should be co-relation between learning outcomes, teaching and assessment

·                     Dynamic Equilibrium should exist between teaching strategies and learning outcomes. This can happen only by taking deeper look at the learning outcomes.

Teacher Student Perspective

If the teaching outcomes (from teachers’ point of view) are not reaching student effectively. Assessment should be done during formative period. Failure of the students should be assessed by teacher herself/himself because it is her/his failure as well. Therefore, empathy and introspection is required. Assessment during formative period is for teacher as well.

To what extend have learning outcomes been achieved

·                Using Rubrics to provide feedback to students

·                Rubric: A grading tool used to describe the criteria which is used in grading performance.

  1. I would like to appreciate two points under this topic

    (1) The first three authors are given the same weightage and the first author is preferred for students.

    (2) Dean is performance is connected with faculties reporting to them.

    Explanation:

    (1) Usually, many institutes, first author is only considered when it comes to the performance which affects the student author who is contributing more. Due to performance evaluation, Processor does not place a student as a first author. This equal weightage, i really appreciate and how deep VIT made a study

    (2) Any management and at any level, there is a partiality to give prioritize who is very close to us. Considering all faculties contribution and achievement is something great from my point of view. Indirectly, this is forcing the higher officials to engage all faculty equality and make them get success.
