The Central library has been established with state-of-art infrastructure to the International Standards, spreads over to four floors with a built-in area of 25000 sq.ft.


  • The Central Library is situated just opposite to the administrative building.

  • Open in all 365 days, 7.30AM to 12 at night (Timing) Weekdays, 7.30 AM to 9PM (Weekends and holidays). There is a facility to drop girls students at night to the hostel and outsiders can stay upto 10 pm in the library. For hackathons with permission the library will be open till 12 at night  on saturday and sunday.

  • Ground Floor-Circulation Kiosk – Return Kiosk, Multi Touch Table, Office for Librarian, Sr. Asst. Librarian & Asst. Librarian. Journal Section, Technical Section, Photocopier Section & Library OPAC.

  • First Floor-Reference Section – Reading Hall, Discussion Rooms, Office for Prof. Incharge – Library, Stack area 

  • Second Floor-Video Conferencing room, Reading Hall, Discussion Room and Photocopier Section, Stack Area II with management and engineering books.

  • Third Floor- Digital Library, Media Resource / NPTEL Centre and Library Server Room. Stack Area IIIwith all law school book

  • There is a Seating Capacity 650 person in a library at a time.

  • The Collection includes 61477 volumes of books, 149625 e-books, 1225 back volumes, 4185 CD’s and DVD’s. The Central Library subscribes National & International Print Journals and more than 15053+ e-Journals.There are 15 types of newspaper in the library.Membership : American Consulate Library

  • Chennai Library has a Digital library, Video Conferencing facility and also provides classroom teaching through NPTEL video courses in the different fields of education.

It has a centrally air-conditioning system, well-protected with fire alarm, CCTV, Flap Barrier and RFID book security system.

RFID Transaction Procedure

  • There is a RFID tag in all the books. 

  • Self checkout, Self check-in/book drop through RFID


RFID Self Check out Procedure

  • Place RFID member card

  • Scan you ID

  • Swipe your finger

  • Place the book for RFID scanning

  • Press confirm button

  • Take receipt

RFID Check-in Procedure


  • Just drop it and you will get a message

  • It will take around half day to issue the same book


For faculties 6 books can be issued for 90 days and can reissue through OPAC

For students 3 books can be issued for 14 days. After That they have to pay fine



Library WebOPAC

  • It contain all information about library

  • This is for searching, for giving feedback etc using intranet

  • This will also give whether the book is available right now or issued. We can do booking for any textbook . We can hold a book for a period of time

  • Can give purchase suggestion with a dean approval

  • Search option is there with advanced search option to create your own library

  • We can create a private or public list of books in WebOPAC


FLap barriers:

  • When you enter the library you have to first scan your id card, and fingerprint then only the flap will open and you can enter the library. This is used to count the number of users using the library. This is for NAAC data.

CCTV: 

  • To monitor the ongoing activity in the library


Information KIOSK:

  • It is located at the entrance of the library to search the book location. Enter some keywords related to the book and you will get information about.


Institutional Repository:

  •  It consists of all the old study material and question paper of all the subjects. Faculties can used it as a reference


Digital Library:

  • Huge number of e-book and e-journals are there. You can access this facility through e-gateway. If any faculty has an e-journal which is not included in the library, they can request to buy.

  • REMOTEXs for Users

  • URL :  egateway.chennai.vit.ac.in


Easy Access from Remote Place

  • RemoteXs software to access our subscribed E-Resources from Of and On Campus.
